How to be the adult she comes to when something is wrong.
2 minute read. For parents, aunts, uncles and carers.
Try this this week
Tell her one specific thing you admire about her that has nothing to do with how she looks.
Never comment on her body
Not even positive comments about weight loss. It teaches her that her body is always being evaluated.
Model it yourself
She hears how you talk about food, exercise and your own body. Drop “I’m being bad today” and “I need to burn this off”.
Keep her confidence
If she shares something sensitive, don’t pass it round the family. Ask her what she needs from you.
Show up consistently
Trust is built in many small moments — lifts, check-ins, remembering what she told you — not one big talk.
Celebrate who she is
Notice her humour, effort, ideas and kindness. Say it out loud.
Stay calm, even if what she says worries you. Thank her for telling you. Ask what would help before offering advice. If you’re concerned about her safety or health, tell her honestly that you want to get her some support — and involve her in how.
